2009 Heliskiing Updates

At Bella Coola Heli Sports we are obsessed with powder. We want it and will do almost anything to get it. This is what originally brought us to Bella Coola and is why we are still here. Of course it wouldn’t be possible without you: our friends and clients. Luckily for us you share our passion for heliskiing: for endless, untracked and un-crowded slopes. So cheers to you for keeping our dream alive for another season and joining us on our quest.

So how was this past season? The most notable thing was the unusual weather. We had to contend with several weeks of very cold temperature, as a series of cold arctic outflows blew through in December, January and February. Also, we had more blue sky days than normal, and although we don’t like to complain about that, it did result in some unexpected dry spells. Both these factors created more complicated ski conditions than usual and some weeks the guides actually had to work to find good snow. On the other hand, we also had some of the most magical days of skiing and riding imaginable. At some point during almost every week we would hear our favorite line: “That was the best day of skiing I’ve ever had!” and that is the Bella Coola magic.

Part of that magic is all our fantastic staff and they deserve a lot of the credit. Let’s start with a big “Thank You” to all the guides for keeping everybody safe and finding the good snow. Many people have remarked that we have one of the best teams in the business and we definitely agree.

Next is the staff at the Tweedsmuir Park Lodge for cooking up delectable meals and keeping everybody comfortable. They will be going strong until the end of April. Yep, that means there’s still time to book a seat. Need some visual encouragement? Watch the recent videos>>

At our Big Mountain Heli Skiing location guests enjoyed DEEP turns by day and the comforts of the renovated Coast Mountain Lodge by Night. Thanks Holly and Fraser! We can’t wait for the bistro going in next door this summer.

Meanwhile ‘back at the ranch’, literally, Pantheon Heliskiing guests are enjoying White Saddle Ranch’s new sauna, new building, renos, and of course big vertical, first descents, and nobody else in sight. Thanks Dave, Lori, Mike & Audrey for all the improvements and of course your hospitality!
